One of our fieldtrips during our ECO DESIGN FORUM in Tel Aviv past October 2016 was to „ONYA City“. Heela and Yoav of the ONYA Collective – a gathering of architects, activists, community leaders, and volunteers – took the time and showed us around one of their impressive projects at the New Central Bus Station in South Tel Aviv.

Here are some impressions of our trip and a glimpse at who the ONYA Collective is and what they are doing in their own words:

The Onya Collective started in 2014 as part of the WorldWide Storefront contest, to reimagine alternative futures for large urban landscapes. We focused on the Central Bus Station in South Tel Aviv, an enormous concrete structure that has destroyed the surrounding neighborhoods and is a center for drug use, prostitution, and crime. We launched the Collective with a two-month-long festival on all seven floors of the bus station, showcasing artwork and creative urban agriculture such as hydroponics and a library with a green wall.

Since that time, we have continued to be active at the bus station with a community garden and space on Neve Shaanan street. We give tours of the bus station to highlight the unique challenges of this massive building, which today stands 60% abandoned, but also provides a home for the city’s marginalized populations.

We are working towards turning the “Rampa Garden” on Neve Shaanan St into a community resource available free of charge to the diverse communities of South Tel Aviv.

Today, the Onya Collective is made up of a core group of architects, activists, community leaders, and volunteers. Through our work at the bus station, cities from across Israel have turned to us to copy our approach to Neve Shaanan and do “placemaking” in their challenging neighborhoods. We utilize community organizing principals to design public spaces that serve the needs of all of the residents of the areas where we work.

iota is a social brand designing beautiful handmade objects for the interior while creating jobs for otherwise unemployed people worldwide. iota’s foundations are based on three fundamentals: the use of handmade elements to create new, unexpected designs; the usage of luxurious bespoke yarns and materials; and being a social business. Our collection gives stage to our unique textiles which we develop and design and is based on the technic of Crochet knitting. Our products vary from rugs in different sizes to poufs, stools and benches, pillows and swings, everything textile oriented, some with complimentary materials or structures. We design our products respectively to our vision so they can be crafted in the homes of otherwise unemployed women whom we train and groom. All our products are handmade by these women who create knitted elements in the comfort of their home and then send them over to our studio to be assembled into the final products. Our name has a meaning: ‚iota‘ stands for „a bit“ in Latin and as it is, little by little, from a single element to the final product, from the individual to the global, we aspire to make an impact on the lives of our clients, our employees and our community.

The vision behind ‚iota‘ is to establish a movement that allows different people from around the world to learn the technique of traditional hand-craftsmanship, to provide them employment and allow them to earn an honest living. This idea contains a social responsibility and a way to maintain traditional arts by extenuating the importance of knowledge and skills. It also portrays the belief that regardless of the infinite possibilities that technology offers, people still seek for a personal and unique hand print.

The main concept in our design is creating innovative products from a traditional starting point, and changing the perception of what can be done using hand techniques. As they are conceptually built up from pieces, our products have a tactile nature which calls to create playful contact and combinations between shapes, colors and textures. iota’s products fit into the “in-between” spaces of our lives, filling emotional and practical needs by creating beautiful objects which also carry a social cause. The search for products and materials is done by physical research. We learn old techniques combined with modern knowledge and come up with new strings in colors that are unique for us. All these create a new textile language that combines various materials into unlimited products. We make tradition contemporary.

iota was founded in 2014 by Shula Mozes, a social entrepreneur who had a dream to utilize the craft of knitting, which she loves, into a social opportunity. Knowing there are countless communities of women worldwide who are not able to work outside of the home, she felt that a design brand based on knitting could offer a solution for them and simultaneously be a platform for exciting and bespoke design. Shula reached out to Tal Zur, an Industrial designer with an inclination to crafts and an understanding in textiles, to be the creative mind behind the project. Tal fell in love with the idea, and together they set to build up their dream.

Today, iota first of all is a social-business, both ecologically and socially conscious, with a commitment to sustainability and community support. The majority of profits from iota’s product sales are invested in welfare and educational programs worldwide. We aim to work within communities with high rates of unemployment, and provide mentoring and training programs for women. We work with people with no prospect of employment, giving those opportunities as we invest in their training and mentorship. We give our employees the option of working from home and reward them with fair pay, while creating a sense of community and empowerment. Our production process is completely transparent, and we absolutely condemn child labor and sweat shop environment.

We teach methods of re-appropriating traditional craft techniques, which requires teaching of skills. We believe the importance of skills does not lie only in the final product but rather in the process. The process of hand craftsmanship, which necessarily requires time and attention from the craftsman, creates an emotional connection between him and the final product he created. This connection creates emotional products. The products embody the craftsman’s unique finger print and thus making him an inseparable part of the final product. As opposed to a machine which creates anonymous products, our handmade products have a past, a background and a memory.

A skill, if utilized, can have rewarding qualities; rewarding to the product that is created as a one of a kind element; and rewarding to the craftsperson, whose skill makes him an expert, and therefore meaningful. This empowerment, deriving from owning a skill, is what we strive to preserve and enhance.

Short Introduction

The Recycling Design Prize, a biyearly public contest, was awarded for the first time in 2006/2007. It is the only national prize that deals with resource conservation and recycling by way of redesign. Creative thinkers and designers of all ages and professional levels are invited to take part in the contest, which 500 to 600 European designers participate in.

Orientation and Attitude

The rule that applies here is simple: Discover the “hidden meaning of waste”. Left-over and waste material must be used to make new products. The spectrum of popular developments span from decorations and furniture to clothes, textiles and accessories. A top-class jury judges the developments, names the prize winners and other chosen objects. The exhibitions are put up at Marta Herford, an international museum of modern art with a special focus on architecture and design. Other exhibition partners have been stilwerk Designcenter and the Museum of Things (Berlin), among others.

germanmade. steht für Produkte mit Seele für Menschen mit Herz und Verstand. Für durchdachte und überraschende Design-Produkte, die unseren Alltag schöner machen. Dabei sind die Taschen und Accessoires liebevoll entwickelt und maßgeblich von Hand in Deutschland gefertigt. Die Produkte bestechen nicht nur durch einen hohen Anspruch an Form und Funktion, sondern überzeugen auch durch ein reduziertes Design, einen unverwechselbaren Charakter und gesunde Nachhaltigkeit.

Alle Produkte entstehen in Kleinstserien in Handarbeit. Dabei werden die Designs, Ideen und Gedanken von Nina in ihren Partnerateliers (u.a.) in Düsseldorf, Apolda und Solingen umgesetzt.

Die verwendeten Rohmaterialien sind von der Designerin handverlesen und werden von den Manufakturen zu Taschen, Hüllen, Portemonnaies und vielem mehr verarbeitet.
Viele der Partnerschaften pflegt und hegt sie bereits seit der Gründung von germanmade. im November 2010. Die enge Zusammenarbeit und die Einfachheit der Prozesse ermöglichen zudem die direkte Kundeneinbindung auf einem außergewöhnlich hohen Individualisierungsgrad.

Wie es dazu kam

germanmade. wurde nicht von langer Hand geplant. Es war die Suche nach genau diesen Produkten, die die Designerin Nina Plum dazu trieb, es selbst zu machen. Der eigene Anspruch. Einfach so. Weil es sich richtig anfühlte. Mit Herzblut und Visionen. Das war Ende 2010. Jetzt sind sie 72 Schritte weiter. Gewachsen. Gereift und hungrig auf mehr. Als frisch gebackene Mutter einer einjährigen Tochter hat sie sich die Partner ins Boot geholt, die genauso arbeiten wie sie, nämlich Power-Mütter.

Die „germanmädels“ haben Spaß an dem, was sie tun. Darum tun sie es auch. Das war so und wird auch so bleiben. Die „germanmades“ sind Kinder der 90er und Menschen des 21. Jahrhunderts. Sie arbeiten im Jetzt und haben wilde Ideen für Morgen. Das spiegelt sich in jedem ihrer Designs. Das germanmade. Netzwerk aus mittelständischen Handwerksbetrieben wird mit jedem neuen Produkt größer und umspannt das ganze Land. Ein Querschnitt aus Deutschland. Von Tradition bis Moderne. Für einzigartige Produkte. Ganz und gar germanmade. Punkt.

Nachhaltigkeit & Design

Es ist die Einheit von Design, Material und Funktion, welche die germanmade. Produkte besonders macht. Gutes Design lebt eben nicht allein von einer guten Idee. Es fordert Kompetenz, Erfahrung und Verständnis für die Materialien. Wie sie aufeinander reagieren. Miteinander harmonieren. Wie belastbar sie sind. Wie man sie verarbeitet. Es erfordert aber auch Mut, andere Wege zu gehen. Die Designs stehen immer im direkten Zusammenhang mit dem verwendeten Material. Mit ihrem minimalistischen Stil, der den Fokus auf Form und Funktion der Produkte legt, spricht germanmade. vor allem Menschen an, die Wert auf Ästhetik und Design legen. Nebenbei ist eine nachhaltige Produktion, vom Material bis zur manuellen Fertigung, einfach selbstverständlich für germanmade. Was der Name verspricht, wird auch gehalten, und zwar konsequent.

Es sind also nicht nur die kurzen Wege und das zeitlose Design, die für Nachhaltigkeit stehen, sondern vor allem – oder – eben auch die handverlesenen Materialien. So wird ausschließlich pflanzlich gegerbtes Rindsleder eingesetzt, was frei von Chromsalzen gegerbt und schadstoffarm gefärbt wird. Sowie natürlicher Wollfilz aus einer der letzten deutschen Manufakturen oder FSC zertifiziertes Holz. Diese Art der Verarbeitung erhält die Natürlichkeit der eingesetzten Materialien. Jede Haut, jedes Stück Holz behält seine Einzigartigkeit, seine eigene Geschichte. germanmade. lebt ihre Geschichte weiter und bietet dadurch nicht nur besondere Produkte, sondern Produkte mit Seele an, die jedes Stück zu einem Unikat werden lässt.

Kurzvorstellung

Lena Schröder hat sich vor 10 Jahren mit ihrem nachhaltigen Label für Damenbekleidung TRINKHALLEN SCHICKERIA selbstständig gemacht. Sie besuchte in Offenbach die Schule für Textiltechnik und studierte anschließend Modedesign. Schon im Studium beschäftigte sie sich mit der Wiederverwertung von Stoffen. Ihre Vorliebe für das Stöbern auf Flohmärkten, aber auch finanzielle Umstände in Zeiten des Studiums, ließen Lena ein besonderes Augenmerk auf ihre Fundstücke legen und sie begann Altes zu etwas Neuem zu transformieren. Ihr Idealismus und die Liebe zum Detail wurden zu einem roten Faden in ihrer Arbeit.

Lena Schröder ist neben Labelchefin auch Inhaberin der Kölner Filiale der KLEIDEREI in Ehrenfeld, wo sich auch das TRINKHALLEN SCHICKERIA Headquarter befindet. Ausserdem ist sie Mitveranstalterin des mehrmals im Jahr stattfindenden DER SUPER MARKT, einer Plattform für junges Mode- und Produktdesign aus Deutschland.

Ausrichtung und Einstellung

TRINKHALLEN SCHICKERIA versteht sich als Slow Fashion Manufaktur – im Gegensatz zur heutigen Fast-Fashion-Industrie. Vintage Stoffe, alte Kleidungsstücke und Überproduktionen werden einzeln ausgesucht und zusammengesammelt, um sie dann zum richtigen Zeitpunkt neu zu verbinden – Upcycling heißt das Zauberwort. Wichtig dabei sind: Regionalität, Ressourcenschonung, Handarbeit, sinnvolle Kooperationen, die Synergien schaffen, sowie Teilen, Leihen und Reparieren. Es gibt bereits so viele Textilien auf der Welt, die wiederverwertet werden wollen, dass es gar keine Notwendigkeit dafür gibt, Dinge komplett neu zu produzieren.

Trendige & langlebige Mode

Es geht nicht um Trends und kurzfristige Must-Haves, sondern darum aus schon bestehenden Materialien langlebige und gute Kollektionen zu produzieren, die jeden Tag zum Einsatz kommen und den Besitzerinnen lange Spaß bringen. Jedes Trinkhallen Schickeria Teil, kann außerdem lebenslang im Atelier in Ehrenfeld repariert werden.

Hinzu kommt, dass all dies nachhaltig und fair in Köln produziert wird.
Es ist schön zu merken, dass unser Konsumverhalten heute immer stärker hinterfragt wird. Es gibt immer mehr Menschen, die sich damit auseinandersetzen und verstehen, dass das Konsumverhalten der Teil ist, der das System am Laufen hält. Die Missstände in den Produktionsketten werden häufiger öffentlich gemacht und das ist gut so!

Gleichzeitig will TRINKHALLEN SCHICKERIA zeigen, dass es nicht notwendig ist den Kopf in den Sand zu stecken, sondern bietet eine Alternative zum modernen Kaufverhalten.

Herkunft der Materialien

Die Stoffe für die Kollektionen werden aus unterschiedlichen Quellen bezogen. Neben den tatsächlichen Stöberrundgängen auf Flohmärkten gibt es unter anderem auch eine Kooperation mit VINTAGE EMDE. Einzelteile, die sich dort nicht so gut verkaufen, werden von dem Label verarbeitet. Eine Win-Win-Situation auch für die Umwelt.

Inzwischen gibt es einen großen Fundus von Stoffen, der im Ehrenfelder Lager auf die Weiterverarbeitung wartet. Oft sind Form, Farbe oder Haptik eines alten Kleidungsstückes der Ausgangspunkt zu einer neuen Idee. Beispielsweise werden Herrenhemden zu Kleidern oder Blusen und Woll-Falten-Röcke zu Kimonos. Die Idee davon, dass jedes Einzelstück aus unterschiedlichen Geschichten und individuellen Erlebnissen zusammengesetzt ist, macht jedes Produkt zu etwas ganz Besonderem. Deswegen gibt es die Kleidungsstücke auch nur im direkten Verkauf.

Kurzvorstellung

Das Kölner Planungsbüro wiederverwandt bietet seit 2011 Raum- und Designkonzepte, die nachhaltig und ökologisch sinnvoll durchdacht sind. Von der umfassenden Sanierung von Altbauten über Biogastronomieobjekten und Shopkonzepten bis zum einzelnen Möbel erstellen die Architektin Wibke Schaeffer und der Diplom- Designer Moritz Zielke, beide Jahrgang ´73, individuelle Planungen – hauptsächlich für die biofaire Branche. Parallel zur gestalterischen Arbeit ist es ihnen eine Herzensangelegenheit, ihre Erfahrungen und ihren Enthusiasmus in TV-Beiträgen, Seminaren und Vorträgen weiter zu geben.

Projekte

Seit ihrer Gründung im Jahr 2011 hat das Team von wiederverwandt diverse Projekte durchführen können, aus denen immer auch neue Möbel in ihre Kollektionen fließen konnten.
Den Startschuss gab ein Hotelleriepaar aus Hannoversch-Münden, das das junge Kreativteam „vom Fleck weg“ auf einer Messe engagierte. Das Projekt und die damit verbundene Planungsarbeit dauerte ein ganzes Jahr, der tatsächliche Umbau dann drei Monate und heute strahlt das seitdem mehrfach publizierte Design des Biohotels Werratal mit dem Restaurant Flux farbenfroh jedem Gast entgegen.

Wie ein Schneeball verbreitete sich der Erfolg in der Biohotelbranche, so folgten nur wenige Wochen später das Biohotel Kassel, dann das Demeter-Café Schloss Türnich bei Köln, das moxxa caffè in Köln und sein Ableger auf der Kö in Düsseldorf, um die größeren Planungen zu nennen.

Aktuell entwickelten Wibke und Moritz das „WoodenPeg“, ein komplettes Ladeneinrichtungssystem für Welt- und Bioläden in Zusammenarbeit mit der GEPA, das noch im Dezember zum ersten Mal in Süddeutschland/ Balingen montiert wird. Das WoodenPeg wird aus heimischen, regionalen Hölzern in Bethel hergestellt, ist modular, flexibel und geht 2017 in Serienproduktion – nachhaltig, ökologisch, fair.

Who we are

We are Grünstreifen! In English “green area”. We are a young, creative, unconventional design studio in Düsseldorf and we create consistent brand presence and extraordinary images and pictorial worlds whereby sustainability and environmental awareness are especially important to us. Our goal is to immediately integrate a project’s ecological, social and sustainable aspects into their concept and design. The outcome is a systematic process that focuses on lasting utility while going easy on natural resources.

Sustainability

Sustainable design, also known as eco or green design, not only took on the responsibility of being mindful of aesthetic and user-friendly aspects, but also environmental aspects. It is very important to have a professional design that doesn’t fall prey to short-lived trends, but has the courage to concentrate on the essentials. The goal is to get results that are as long-lasting and sustainable as possible in order to save resources and money.

Sustainable graphic design calls for flexibility. You constantly have to ask yourself which implementation is the ideal solution for the current assignment. How can you use media in the best way and are there alternatives, for example digital solutions, that you can use in order to reduce the amount of paper used? If you have to use print media then you should use environmentally friendly material such as recycled paper, paper from certified sustainable forestry or some other environmentally friendly alternative. And the production should also be environmentally friendly.

SUSTAINABILITY PAYS OFF
Sustainable design means that effectiveness and efficiency are a focal point so that not only resources are used wisely, but costs are also reduced. Keeping the use of paper, dyes and transportation to a minimum saves money.

SUSTAINABLE DESIGN IS A PROCESS
Sustainable design is multifaceted. There isn’t a catch-all solution or “the” one way to do something. The seemingly obvious solution is not always the right solution.

Sustainable design is a process in which it is important to stay in dialogue with the clients in order to work together on improvements and developments.

Kurzvorstellung

Seit 2009 ist Nika mit dem eigenen Designbüro für verschiedene interdisziplinäre Projekte in den Bereichen Produkt- und Konzeptdesign tätig. Bereits während ihres Studiums setzte sie sich intensiv mit der Verantwortung des Designs gegenüber der Umwelt auseinander und versucht seitdem, sowohl kreativ als auch organisatorisch Impulse für eine nachhaltigere Welt und ein sozialeres Miteinander zu gestalten. Seit 2011 unterrichtet sie zudem an der ecosign Akademie für Gestaltung in Köln.
Zusammen mit Dunja Karabaic leitet Nika übrigens auch das labor gruen. Hier entwickeln und realisieren die beiden spezielle Projekte zur Umwelt- und Nachhaltigkeitskommunikation. Das zuletzt von ihnen durchgeführte Projekt „Das gute Leben im Veedel“ gilt als innovatives Pilotprojekt für Deutschland und bewies erfolgreich, dass mit Vermittlung von Nachhaltigkeit durch soziales Miteinander eine nachhaltige Stadtteilentwicklung gefördert werden kann. Das Projekt wurde von der Deutschen Bundesstiftung Umwelt, Europas renommiertester Umweltstiftung, gefördert und auch als UN-Dekade Projekt „Bildung für Nachhaltige Entwicklung“ ausgezeichnet.

Ausrichtung und Einstellung

Als Gestalter hat man wunderbare Möglichkeiten, Botschaften in seine Werke zu integrieren und damit unsere Gesellschaft ein Stück weit positiv zu beeinflussen.
Nikas Produkte wie Projekte sollen daher nicht nur Freude machen, sondern dabei auch aufklären, Geschichten erzählen, zum Nachdenken anregen und dazu inspirieren, anders zu handeln.
Um diese Vielschichtigkeit zu erreichen, kann es bei der Gestaltung – gerade von Projekten – mitunter ganz schön komplex zugehen. Neben den formalen Gestaltungsmerkmalen können dann auch weiche gestalterische Mittel, wie Ansätze aus der Soziologie, der Psychologie oder dem Marketing zur gestalterischen Farbpalette gehören.
So lassen sich z.B. wunderbar Ansätze aus Verhaltens- oder Lerntheorien mit praktischen Zielen mischen. In der Theorie erhält man so Anhaltspunkte, welche Kriterien erfüllt sein müssen, damit sich Menschen z.B. mit etwas Bestimmten identifizieren können und versucht diese dann auch praktisch anzubieten.

Bei genauerer Betrachtung haben Designer also mächtige Werkzeuge an der Hand, um z.B. Trends zu schaffen oder Nachfragen zu generieren: Begehrlichkeiten, Bedürfnisse, Konsumwelten können geweckt oder neue Kontexte geschaffen werden. Wir Gestalter haben sehr großen Einfluss darauf, was wir konsumieren und wie wir konsumieren.
Und genau diese Potentiale sollten wir, wo es nur geht, nutzen, um eine zeitgerechtere und verantwortungsvollere Zukunft zu gestalten.
Dabei geht es auch darum, sich über die Auswirkungen der eigenen Kommunikation und Gestaltungsleistung auf die Gesellschaft und Umwelt bewusst zu werden.
Um Dinge oder Projekte zu entwickeln, die einen möglichst großen Nutzen für den Menschen haben, ohne die Umwelt unnötig zu belasten bedeutet heute also noch viel mehr als früher Reflexion, Forschung und Wissenschaft.

The first expert of the ECO DESIGN FORUM in Israel and Palestine we want to present to you is María Paz Montecinos. She is based out of Spain and will give us great insights into sustainable design in Barcelona. At the moment she is working for Drap Art designing the graphic and audiovisual material for the festival.

She also does workshops incorporating new technologies, transforming city waste into raw material for designers / artists to create their works, which are to be produced in 3D printers. You can read more about this project below.

Profile

Maria Paz was born in Santiago de Chile and is an art director and cultural manager. She studied in Barcelona, Spain, where she presently resides.

She has gained a lot of experience in projects in development cooperation and has worked in projects in Europe, Africa, Asia and Latin America for the World Summit on Sustainable Development, United Nations, Unicef, UNDP and the IDB (Inter-American Development Bank), among others.

She has participated in diverse art projects and projects dealing with environmental sustainability, such as Drap Art in Barcelona, Arte Cien in Latin America and the Re:NEW Festival in Pittsburgh, U.S.A.

She works in research and creative projects that are focused on the observation and reflection of territory from a landscape perspective together with the historical and social contexts in order to create an artistic exchange between artists in different parts of the world.

The main focus of her work covers culture as a tool for intervention and social transformation, working on artistic projects that are accessible to everyone, for example in public spaces or bringing projects to extreme geographical areas where access to culture is limited.

Association

Drap-Art is an association of artists who have chosen trash to be their material and/or conceptual resource. Drap-Art promotes a new trend in visual art that has its origins in the movements of the late nineteenth and early twentieth century, such as Arts and Crafts or William Morris. In Catalonia these ideas were promoted by artists such as Santiago Rusiñol and Ramon Casas. One of their utopias imagined a world without large concentrations of power, but distributed in small economic units, in which human beings, with their creativity fully developed, worked independently in their workshops, both in free creations and commissioned works, designer objects or hand crafted products.

Activities

The label Drap-Art is doing a handful activities to fulfill the idea of the association. Drap-Art’16 arrives at its 14th edition and celebrates 20 years organizing festivals. The event will be developed as usual in eight modalities that show us the possibilities of creative recycling: group exhibitions of art and designer objects made from recyclable materials, interventions in public space, a space for thought and discussion, participative workshops, performances, audiovisuals and environmental cinema, but it will substitute its traditional Xmas Fair with a weekend of live creation, in memory of its first festival the Maraton of Art & Recycling in Barcelona. The festival also takes place in Uruguay and the Pittsburgh, USA.

Place

Drap-Art’s headquarters is a studio in Barcelona. It is the centre of operations of the association and the International Festival of Recycling Art of Catalonia. The studio is an exhibition space, specialised in recycled art, where four exhibitions are shown every year and where the artworks of Drap-Art’s members are also on permanent display. It also hosts art, design and crafts from all over the world, created from waste materials. Furthermore, workshops are offered at the space and it also has a documentation centre, provided with literature about Art Brut, and recycled art, the social history of trash and other related topics.

Happy beginnings

Even back as a graduate student I realised: I want more out of life. I want to do more than “just” work in advertising. I realised that people can use their creative and communicative skills to really do something good and important. And that is why I decided to go into advertising values. It’s meaningful – and fun! So I do freelance work for agencies that accept mainly socially oriented or sustainable projects as well as for non-profit organisations and associations. Since I have become the self-appointed Minister for Happiness, I have been bringing together all of these aspects in my project “Ministry for Happiness and Well-being” and work on creative ways to help our gross national happiness (GNH) grow.

There’s more to it than what meets the eye

Since I began focusing on topics such as happiness and well-being and have got to know the extensive world of social design, I am convinced that designers can do more than just produce pretty, colourful things. We can help make this world a better place by using our skills to make complex issues visually accessible to the public, to present them in an understandable and creative manner and help contribute possible solutions.

You can reach a great deal of people with good, clear design projects and creative ideas. There are many opportunities to draw public attention to important issues and problems that deserve to be attended to or need to be solved.

The path to gross national happiness – a group effort

I have been running the multi-media communications campaign “Ministry for Happiness and Well-being” for a few years now and I work Europe-wide as a freelance Minister for Happiness, working with people to come up with diverse, creative ways to increase the gross national happiness in their respective country.

With inspiring events and lively activities such as interventions in public spaces, street art, workshops in schools and companies, I call on people to ask themselves what it means to them to lead a good life – and to become actively involved in creating a good life.

Time and again I am fascinated by how much positive feedback we get from the public, be it in social networks, through email or people that talk to me personally at events and workshops. I give people down-to-earth ideas and material that they can use in everyday life and that they can use in their own activities. Fun, creative input help people realise that happiness is something that everyone can discover for themselves each and every day and that happiness can grow and be shared with others. And since this is a multi-media campaign, I have all the artistic freedom I want and need. Sometimes I film interviews, sometimes I set up an online contest, give a workshop that combines methods of design thinking with happiness or I offer an inspiring film night with time for a discussion afterwards. Whatever the media used, the goal is constant: Empowering people. Bringing people together and creating shared spaces and experiences and getting people to step outside of their comfort zone.

Happiness means change

I always work intuitively. I have buried my business plan deep in my bottom desk drawer. I don’t want to define a target group, I want to be in constant contact and exchange ideas with the project’s fans and friends and expand my network. I work on exciting cooperative projects and enjoy the fact that my job is part of a happiness project, if you will. As is life.

Happiness is movement – in the sense of change. Everything is in transition, it seems that things around us are changing faster and faster all the time and our job is to accept these changes and make the best out of them. That is the art of life: Taking advantage of the opportunities change can offer.

And if my work can contribute to the positive outcomes of these changes, then that makes me very happy.
